YVONNE

Yvonne was the girl I once thought of marrying. She was from Wales. We were both students at the University of Geneva and we were both residing in the university dormitory. We met in the dorm’s TV room. She was an outspoken girl: During the very first hour of our meeting, she asked me, “Do you have a girlfriend?”.  I replied, “Once upon a time!”. I asked her the same question, and she gave the same answer: “Once upon a time!”.

Yvonne was a charming girl with black hair, green eyes, and a smiling face. Our partnership lasted for five years in Switzerland, Germany and Turkey. When we faced one of life’s crossroads, we had to go in different directions…

Yvonne was a person who truly deserves this song I made for her. I do not have her contact numbers anymore; so I hope the song would be heard soon by her.

The following instruments were used in the studio recordings of the song:

  • Acoustic guitar
  • Banjo
  • Harmonica
  • Double bass
  • Drum Kit
  • Percussion instruments
Lyrics:

YVONNE

YVONNE WAS A GIRL ANY MAN WOULD LOVE TO LOVE,
BUT I WAS THE BLESSED ONE FOR MANY YEARS.
SHE HAD THIS LOVELY, NATURAL SMILING FACE
DECORATED WITH DARK HAIR AND GREEN EYES.

WE WERE AT THE UNIVERSITY WHEN OUR PATHS CROSSED.
AN HOUR HAD BARELY PASSED THE TIME WE FIRST MET,
WHEN SHE SUDDENLY ASKED ME IF I HAD A GIRLFRIEND.
“I USED TO HAVE ONE,” I SAID, AND HER ANSWER WAS THE SAME.

CHORUS

SO, I SING THIS SONG FOR YVONNE,
WITH DEEP LOVE AND GRATITUDE…
SOME FORTY YEARS LATER I SING HER SONG
AND I HOPE IT WOULD SOON BE HEARD.

SHE TAUGHT ME HOW TO SAY “I LOVE YOU,” IN WELSH;
HER TURKISH SOUNDED NICE WHEN SHE SAID THOSE MAGIC WORDS (Seni Seviyorum).
I USED TO SAY “BORE DA,” WHEN SHE WOKE UP IN THE MORNING;
SHE REPLIED “GÜNAYDIN,” TO WISH A BRIGHT DAY.

DRIVING ON THE SHORES OF LE LAC DE GENEVE,
SHE WAS WATCHING THE BOATS PASS BY FROM THE SIDE WINDOW.
MY HAND ON HER LAP AND SHE LAID HERS ON MINE;
“SHE IS THE WOMAN I WOULD MARRY!” I THOUGHT.

CHORUS

SO, I SING THIS SONG FOR YVONNE,
WITH DEEP LOVE AND GRATITUDE…
SOME FORTY YEARS LATER I SING HER SONG
AND I HOPE IT WOULD SOON BE HEARD.

AND I SING THIS SONG FOR YVONNE,
WITH DEEP LOVE AND GRATITUDE…
SOME FORTY YEARS LATER I SING HER SONG
AND I HOPE IT WOULD SOON BE HEARD.
